First time I had seen a woman wearing the full face  Burqua style thing in Manhattan. She was taking it on and off much to the delight of a little boy sitting opposite. I must say in all my years living in Whitechapel, london I never saw women playing with their veils in public. My next door neighbour wore one and it used to make me laugh when I was in her house and she entered from the street. The first thing she would do was peel it off as it was stuck on with velcro, a modern solution to an old problem. She wore it through choice, her daughter didn’t wear them at all, I think there is perhaps more personnel freedom for Muslim women than we think, at least in the West.
